MOCK BANQUET
— <s>ENJOYABLE FUNCTION AT ST. ANDREW’S HALL Last evening at St. Andrew’s Schoolroom a very successful and most enjoyable Mock Banquet was held. The function had been arranged by the Ladies’ Guild in conjunction with the church managers | and they are to be congratulated on the pleasant result of their efforts. It was evident from the decorations and the “mock” edibles and drinks that were provided that a great deal of preparatory work had been put into the function by the ladies. The chairman for the evening was the Rev. A. C. McLean and his ready wit and happy manner set proceedings in motion in the right spirit and maintained a merry atmosphere. During his speech of welcome he read several telegrams supposedly sent by His Excellency the Governor, the Premier and the Hon. J. G. Cotes. A short toast list was honoured,
Lhe humorous element being predom-
inant at all times. Those who moved the various toasts were Messrs. J. C. Johnston (board of managers); S. Annand (local bodies), T. Given (the ladies), and G. Hames (the Beadle). Responses to the toasts were made by Messrs. J. F. Cook, P. Marfell and L. Wood. A very enjoyable programme was rendered by the following:—Songs, Misses Jean Gibson and I. Cairns and Mesdames T. Murray and P. A. Riddell; duet, Mrs. R. Staines and Miss Caugliley; original recitation, Mrs. J. Hames; humorous songs, Mr. Wood; flute solo, Mr. D. Swainsbury; musical monologues, Mr. F. V. Ward; and selections by an orchestra consisting of Miss King (piano), Messrs. King, Annand, Walker, Green and Leigh. A delicious supper that was in distinct contrast to the “mock” fare provided during the banquet, formed a fitting conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
