Trapping of Opossums.

The Government has decided to declare a close season for the trapping of opossums this year. A Popular Method of Calculation! ‘‘When was your house built?” an insurance inspector asked a Waitara man. “I don’t know,” was the reply, “but it was the year Star Rose won the New Zealand. Cup.” Aerial Display. An aerial display, including parachute descents by Pilot Officer “Scotty” Fraser, will be staged on Saturday at Svenson’s paddock, Farm Road. Squadron Leader McGregor will take passengers at 10/- each. A similar display will bo given at Onga Onga tomorrow. A Swallowed Coin. A child who had swallowed a halfpenny was recently admitted to the Waipukurau Hospital. An X-ray was taken and the coin was duly located in the throat. At first it was thought that an operation would be necessary to remove it, but the skilful use of a pair of long forceps brought the coin to light»< Ruahines Mantled With Snow. The Ruahine Range presents an attractive appearance to-day, being heavily snow-clad for the first time this winter. During yesterday and last night the weather was exceptionally cold, the fall of snow extending from the higher peaks to the foothills. With the Wind coming from a westerly direction the conditions in the Waipukurau district have been keen-edged, fires and heaters being in special demand. A Citizen’s “Fall.” A well-known business man who was prominent in the at the mock banquet held at St. Andrew’s Schoolroom last evening had the misfortune to measure his length on the footpath in the Main Street this morning. A fellow citizen who also was at the function last evening assured a “Press” representative that his friend’s accident was most certainly not the result of what was imbibed at the banquet, the liquor provided there being decidedly not true to label. Nucleus of Museum. A caller at the “Press” Office today who is interested in such matters" made the suggestion that steps should be taken to encourage the establishment of a small museum in Waipukurau in conjunction with the library and. reading-room. That some very interesting specimens by way of whalebones, barnacles and shells have been unearthed in the lime quarry at Marakeke, as already recorded, while moa-bones, also Maori relics are from time to time made available in Central ’Hawke’s Bay, lends strength to the proposal. Paid Under Protest. The Hawke’s Bay County Council yesterday decided to pay, under in full the Hospital Board’s levy for the year ended March 31, 1931. The council intimated its intention in future to pay the levy only as the rates were collected'. In connection with the payment of the levy for the current year, it was decided to co-operate with the Napier and Hastings Borough Councils in meeting the Hospital Board in conference, to ascertain if the levies on' the contributing bodies might not be reduced. Well Armed! The shipping company rule that fare* arc subject to exchange did not apply’ to one woman passenger, who sailed from Sydney one day last week for London by the Aberdeen and Commonwealth line’s Hobson’s Bay. To the surprise of the booking elerk, she placed on the counter £lO in English pennies, £3 10s in English halfpennies, £29 in English threepences and sixpences, and £4 in English florins. Systematic saving and the help of friends had enabled her to pay the shipping company in its own coin, with the. result that she was £7 10s better off.

Next Friday sees the opening of the most extensive and exclusive collection* of model gowns and millinery yet shown in Hawke’s Bay. A. shipment of goods is being opened from the leading gown and millinery houses of London and the Continent which we confidently assert cannot be bettered for style or price in New Zealand. Be sure and see our first showing on Friday, March 4th—MATHEWSONS LTD., 34 Memorial Square, Napier, Phone 747.
