DO. X SUCCEEDS
MISSES DISASTER , WHEN’ IN ACT OF MOORING SOUTHAMPTON, May 23. The German flying boat Do.X came near to disaster to-night, when an officer carrying a mooring rope fell into the water and the giant craft was caught in a fast tide and carried toward the Calshot air station jetty. Only a few moments before slio would have piled up against the jetty one of her engines was put in motion and she slowly taxied out of danger.
-After the giant plane had alighted perfectly on Southampton Water at 7.15 p.m., ending her 650-mile flight from Spain (and earlier Atlantic flight from New York), she was taken in tow by vr the Royal Air Force plane and headed for .'her moorings. Just as she was in a position to be moored for the night and the tow rope had been tossed off, the accident occurred.
Mechanics standing on her wings strove frantically to get the working. Twice the engines -Started and failed.
