“STRIKE STRATEGY”
COMMUNIST PUNISHED FOR SEDITIOUS INTENTION (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Twelve months ’ imprisonment with hard labour was the sentence imposed by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., on Charles Francis Riley, aged 38, a Communist, who pleaded guilty to having in his possession for distribution, a booklet entitled “ Strike Strategy and Tactics” which enrourages and advises lawlessness and expresses seditious intention.
“ Since you were before the Court before,” said the Magistrate, “I have taken the trouble to read ‘ ‘ Strike Strategy and Tactics’ from end to end. It is full of matter written with no other object than to incite certain persons to strike, to resist law and, order and generally to cause turmoil in our little country.
“ There is one significant passage near the end which says that the Red International of Labour Unions must be informed of all conflicts in this country.
"You havp. been convicited. before, and despite,the fact that the <?purt has treated you with great leniency you have consistently ignored the strong sentiment for law and order in this country. . Th court has only one thing to do if you persist in it —twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour. ’ ’
