Automotive products of G*rcat Britain now dominate the New Zealand market in both the pleasure ear and in the commercial vehicle field. During the first quarter of 1932 the imports of cars and car chassis into New Zealand from all sources totalled 1004, and of these 873, or 87 per cent., were English makes. The relative preference for the British product in the market for utility vehicles was almost as great. The imports of chassis for lorries, trucks, vans, and buses during the first - quarter of this year aggregated 202, and 77 per cent, of these vehicles were English. Official returns for the first quarter of 1932 ending March 31. disclose a complete reversal of the relative positions of British and foreign makes as compared with the corresponding period of previous years. i Councillor on Relief Work An unusual position has cropp.ed up in Takapuna concerning the position of Mr C. M. Dowd, who was elected as a member of the Takapuna Borough < Council on March 17 at a by-election Tendered necessary by the resignation of Mr Bryce Hart. Because Mr Dowd had undertaken relief work in the borough he is no longer eligible to sit as a councillor. This was made quite ’■clear to the council by the Crow-n LawOffice, which states that a member of a local body who accepts relief work from the council of which he is a member, comes within the ban of section 40 of the Municipal Corporations Act. This .states that any person holding any office or place of profit, other than that of Mayor, or deputy-Mayor, under, or in the gift of the council, is incapable of being a councillor. This ruling automatically terminates Mr Dowd’s scat on the council. An extraordinary vacancy now- occurs, and another by-election will be necessary.
