RUGBY FOOTBALL

Hawke’s Bay Games SECOND ROUND COMMENCES PLAY ON SATURDAY The Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby Sub-Union’s competitions were continued on Saturday, when the second round was commenced under ideal conditions. The fixture played at Waipukurau, Takapau v. H. 5.0.8., afforded a particularly bright exhibition of the game. Both teams displayed good form and at half-time it was anyone’s game, with the score Old Boys 9, Takapau 8. Then, just before the end, a sensational score by Tremewan, put the issue beyond doubt in favour of Takapau. Waipawa and Onga Onga played a very even game at Onga Onga and both of these teams are steadily improving. The senior championship table is now very even, four of the five teams being together with six points each, although Te Ante are the virtual leaders, having played one game less than the other clubs. In the junior championship Waipawa continued on theii* winning career, by soundly trouncing Takapau, and for the six games played, have collected the remarkable total of 121 points for three against. Old Boys defeated Waipukurau by a close margin after a very even game, whilst Onga Onga were unable to field a team against Tikokino. Good form was also shown in the third grade matches. RESULTS AT A GLANCE SENIOR Takapau (13) v. Old Boys (9). Onga Onga (9) v. Waipawa (6). Te Aute, a bye. JUNIOR Waipawa (22) v. Takapau (0). Old Boys (6) v. Waipukurau (3). Tikokino (win) v. Onga Onga (default). THIRDS Waipukurau High (17) v. Waipawa (0). Te Aute (11) v. Waipawa High (6). Waipukurau, a bye. SENIOR GRADE TAKAPAU 13, OLD BOYS 9 Second Spell Both teams made it willing at the opening of the second spell, there being little to choose between them until C. Wilson got a ball at his toes and dribbled it through to the red twenty-five. McCarthy secured and made a good run, but nullified his good work by passing forward when a try was in sight. Play remained even for some time, although Old Boys had the territorial advantage. Wallis had a penalty, but failed to put it over. Then came one of the most sensational pieces of play seen on Central Park for a long time. Old Boys had been battling away at the Red line unable to over come the stubborn defence. The ball came out of a melee; Tremewan snapped it up and punted down field. For once Piki let the ball get past him. Tremewan, following up fast, secured and make a brilliant run, almost 70 yards, with no one to beat for a great try. Hunter converted. Takapau 13 Old Boys 9 The crowd was at a high pitch of excitement at the sudden turn of affairs. A free kick to Old Boys saw Wallis short punt and follow up fast. Takapau was in a dangerous position, but a force-down saved the situation. The crowd had left the stand and was yelling on the sideline. With only about ten minutes to go Old Boys were battling hard to make up their unexpected deficit. They bullocked their way right through to the red line, but an infringement relieved the position for Takapau, who were putting up a determined defence. The White backs got going but broke down at McCarthy. Hanita, intercepting smartly, broke away and seemed likely to repeat Tremewan’s spectacular run, but Piki brought him low. McCarthy punted for the line and following up, seemed to have a try in the bag. Nepe, however, snapped u$ the.ball and found the line as the

final whistle, brought a great game to an end. Takapau t ...j 13 Old Boys . . 9 Mr. P. Smyrk was the referee. ONGA ONGA (9) v. WAIPAWA (6) These two teams met on the OngaOnga grounds, the game being of' a very even nature, both sets of forwards working very well. Cochrane was again outstanding for Onga Onga, whilst Whaati and Richardson showed good form for Waipawa. Referee, Mr. R. Whitworth. JUNIOR GRADE OLD BOYS (6) v WAIPUKURAU (3) This match was played as a cur-tain-raiser to the senior game on No. 1 ground, Central Park, Waipukurau and apparently the old rivalry which had existed between the two local clubs is now manifesting itself in the juniors, as the contest was very stubbornly fought from start to finish. For the winners Jack Anderson and Jim Anderson each scored unconverted tries, whilst Johnson kicked a penalty goal for the. losers. G. Blair, of Old Boys, was ordered off. Referee, M. T. Spence. WAIPAWA (22) v. TAKAPAU (0) This game was played on No. 2 ground, Central Park, and although the Takapau forwards held their own very well, their backs were no match for the speedy yellow rear guard, whose combined movements were a treat to watch. The Knobloch brothers and MacPherson were; the pick of a very fine back line, whilst Collett was the best forward. All four should be worthy of a place in the Hawke’s Bay junior representative team on June 3. Referee, Mr. T. Spencer. THIRD GRADE WAIPUKURAU D.H.S. (17) v. WAIPAWA (0) The Waipukurau D.H. School team journeyed to Waipawa on Saturday afternoon and met the Waipawa Town 15. The cone.est ended in a comfortable win for the Waipukurau boys, by 17 points to nil. Tries were scored by P. James (2), P. Lee (2) and A. Svenson. James converted a try. TE AUTE 11 v. WAIPAWA H.S. 6 The game was played at Waipawa and was very fast throughout, both teams playing splendid football. Woaka, White and Herewini were the scorers for the. winers, whilst Pilcher scored an unconverted try and Logan kicked a penalty goal for School. Referee, Mr. F. O’Halloran. Town v. Country REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS Very keen interest is being manifested throughout Central Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast districts in next Saturday’s match between Na-pier-Hastings and the combined Central Hawke’s Bay and East Coast fifteen to be played at Waipawa. As competition fixtures in Napier and Hastings are not being played, the visiting team will be at full strength and the selector, Mr. N. A. MacKenzie, will be present in search of available material for his team to meet Wairarapa on June 3. The country sub-unions are putting every effort forward to field the best team possible, and a trial match will be played at Waipukurau on Wednesday between teams representing the best available talent. SUMMARY OF RESULTS The following is a summary of results of games played in the various Napier-Hastings grades on Saturday:— SENIOR Technical 0.8. (10) v. Hastings High School 0.8., (nil). ' Napier H. 5.0.8. (3) v. M. 8.0.8. (3). Hastings (11) v. Pirates (9). Celtic (6) v. Tamatea (3). Napier H. 5.0.8. is leading for the championship with 9 points. Hastings H. 5.0.8. and Technical Old Boys being runners-up (8 points each). NAPIER-HASTINGS SENIORS MATCH WITH CENTRAL H.B. The following team has been chosen to represent Napier—Hastings against Central Hawke’s Bay-East Coast, at Waipawa next Saturday. Full-back: Rossiter (Technical O.B.). Three-quarters: Smith (H. 5.0.8. Harvey (Tamatea), Williams (Technical O.B.). Five-eighths: Setford (Technical O.B.), Howell (Pirates). Halves: Cooke (Hastings, capt.), Lambie (H. 5.0.8. Back row: Satherley (M. 8.0.8. Campbell (Hastings), Steere (H.S.O.B.), Wilson (Celtic). Front row: Flowers (H. 5.0.8. Robertson (Celtic), McDuff (Hastings H. 5.0.8.). Emergencies.—Backs: Le Quesne (Hastings). Forward: Rolls (H.S.O.B.). It will be noted that the Hawke’s Bay selector has decided upon a three-four scrum formation, therefore it will be desirable for the Central Hawke’s Bay selectors to follow suit in the interests of provincial unity. The result should be to more readily open up back play, there being too halves, ds well as two fiveeighths and the usual three-quarter line in action. This is a departure form the formation favoured by “Billy” Wallace, viz., 3-3-2 scrum combination as most resembling our old basis, and the usual arrangement of the backs. The team chosen by Mr. McKenzie is a strong one and there is not likely to be much change, except for the possible inclusion of Wairoa and Central Hawke's Bay players, in this selection when Wairarapa is met on June 3. NORTH ISLAND TEAM AUCKLAND NOMINATIONS (Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, Saturday. The following seven Auckland players have been nominated for the North Island Rugby team: —Palmer, A. Finlayson, Batty, Solomon, Corner, Caughey, Heazlewood. All except the last two have represented New Zealand. HAWKE’S BAY NOMINATIONS The Hawke’s Bay selector (Mr. N. A. McKenzie) has nominated the following players for selection in the North Island team for the match against the South Island representatives to be played at Christchurch on June 4 next:— E. R. G. Steere (Napier O.B.). C. Campbell (Hastings). C. Satherly (Marists). R. N. Williams (Tech. O.B.). The first three are forwards, and the fourth a three-quarter. Australian Rugby N.S.W. BEATS VICTORIA SYDNEY, May 21. In a Rugby Union match New South Wales defeated Victoria by 26 to 19.
