Anxious Railway Moments

Passengers from Dunedin by the north-bound express last week had an unenviable if not alarming experience. Crossing the Otaio River the majority of travellers had their hearts in their mouths as the train crawled at a snail pace over the structure, which was withstanding a terrific buffeting from the swirling flood waters roaring beneath the piers. The Pareora Bridge had been giving the department some concern during flood time, and the train crew took no risks. Unhooking the engine, they sent her crawling across to test the structure, while the passengers, with their heads out of the windows and standing outside, -watched the proceedings with deep misgiving. Satisfied that the bridge was safe to cross the engine was backed over again, hooked up to the carriages, and the train moved with great caution over the structure safely.
