Exploitation of Girls
“I think it is disgraceful the way some people are trying to exploit girls without work these days,” was a remark passed the other day (says the Wanganui Chronicle). “It was stated, in support of this assertion that ,a girl who had been unable to obtain employment of any kind as a typistc, for which she had been trained, heard of a vacant position in a dressmaking department. Thinking that she might be able to apply her knowledge in this connection, she applied for the post. She was rather surprised, however, When she learnt that her duties consisted chiefly of scrubbing floors and tidying up, for which she wouli receive the sum of Is 6d a day. Another girl it was stated, applied for a position as a domestic help, and was offered the sum of 5s a week, with no help.
