Maori Adze Found
Some time ago when a well was being dug for John Imlah, of Manaia„it was found necessary to use an ex-
plosive to pierce a stratum of hard sandstone. At a depth of about 12 feet a Maori adze, of a dull grey brown colour, but perfectly formed, and of the shape usual for such an instrument, was uncovered. It was cleaned and showed an almost unmarred surface, broken only by a few small dents on the edge and on the head. The Rev. H. Curran, who was consulted, stated that the place where the adze was found is the bottom of a Maori food pit, which, in the course of time, was covered in by earth. The depth tallies with that usually round Maori pas, which were very numerous in the district round the plains west of Manaia.
