DISPOSAL OF SHEEP

ALLEGED FRAUDULENCY FARMER. BEFORE COURT TE AWAMUTU, May 14. A young farmer. Herbert Stevenson, of Ngaroma, about 30 miles south-east of Te Awamutu, was brought before justices in the Te Awamutu Court on Thursday on two charges of disposing of sheep held under an instrument of security, with intent, to defraud, constituting breaches of the Chattels Transfer Act. Evidence showed that Stevenson purchased a. line of 461 Romney-cross fullmouth ewes in March, 1929, through an auctioneering firm, at Hamilton, giving that firm an instrument of security. Stevenson sold 136 lambs for £64 12s last June, and later disposed of 99 ewes, taking cattle in part exchange. Last January he filed in bankruptcy. When questioned a few days ago by Detective-Sergeant Thompson, of Hamilton, Stevenson admitted the facts as stated, and added that he had not notified the firm concerned that he had disposed of the sheep. He added that he had used the proceeds of the sale to maintain his familv.

Stevenson entered a plea, of guilty to both charges, and was committed for sentence at the Hamilton Supreme Court. Bail was fixed at £lOO.
