Large Halo Around Moon.

An unusually pronounced lunar halo was seen in Auckland on Sunday evening in the northern sky, a golden-hued ring of large dimensions attracting considerable attention from many observers. Mr H. M. Vincent stated that the phenomenon was due to the refraction of the rays of the moon through innumerable ice particles in cirrus clouds, and was only visible in this type of cloud, taking place at about seven miles above the earth. Occasionally two discs can be seen at opposite angles, when the rare phenomenon of mock moons oi' mock suns is witnessed. The occurrence is usually, a prelude to stormy weather, as it denotes a great variation in the temperature between the upper layer of air and that at the surface.
