CONSTABLE ASSAULTED
FOUR MEN ATTACK SPECIAL
VERBAL WARNINGS RECEIVED
(Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday
A temporary constable was assaulted on Friday night by four men who were lying in wait for him on his way home. One of his assailants knocked him down with a blow on the face and the constable, a lightly built young man, seeing the futility of attempting to defend himself against such odds, took to his heels and got safely away. The assault was not altogether unexpected for the victim received two telephone messages and one verbal warning through a friend that unless he withdrew from the police he would be set upon. Many similar threats have been made to other special police and their families.
