Masterton Volunteers
An interesting demonstration of the use of modern weapons was given by the Masterton Volunteers in the presence of a largo number of the residents of Kaituna who were their hosts on the occasion. Indirect lire practice was carried out by machine gunners, on Mr Pringle’s property at Kaituna, under* the direction of Lieut. Holmes, platoon commander. The local people were much interested in one demonstration in which five guns gave an example of overhead or covering fire. Many comments •were made in regard to thp remarkable efficiency of the weapons employed. After the display of machine gunnery, the platoon wn. the guest of the residents at; afternoon tea. On behalf of the platoon Q.M.S. Spicer expressed warm appreciation of the way in which the men had been treated by Kaituna residents. Friendly contact of this kind, he said was of great help, to the volunteer movement and an added inducement to prospective recruits. The day concluded with a hearty vote of thankjs- passed by the volunteers to their hosts, and a brief “sing-song” under the leadership of Private C.. Cuff. < >
