MANY ON JOBS

A very large proportion of relief workers due to start to-day are at work on jobs. Friday is off day for married men, consequently it is not easy to judge the fclings of the men.

From to-day’s figures, officially tho strike is still on and at a meeting at the Trades Hall this morning the strikers present indicated by resolution that they were not -willing to resume work under the conditions announced by Mr Coates. Tho Police Commissioner said this morning that indications are that things arc returning to normal. A very satisfactory response was received to an appeal for more special police from a very excellent type of citizen. Governor-General ’ s Message The following telegram was received by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. Hislop) from Lord Bledisloe: — “I desire to express to you as Mayor and to your city my sympathy in your present distress. I fervently hope that reasonable counsels will now prevail and that the capital city and its traditional high reputation for observing law and order will be speedily reestablished.” “In reply Mr Hislop says: “I am pleased to say order has been rapidly restored and with wiser counsels now’ prevailing our troubles are speedily diminishing. ’ ’ At a meeting of the citizens’ relief committee this morning to consider the question of relief as it is affected by the present strike of relief workers the following resolution was passed: —• “That relief be granted for a period of one week to wives and children only of men who are on strike.”

Supplementing this information tho chairman of the Hospital Board said that after usual inquiries had been made regarding tho wages earned, the amount of relief afforded will he based on the usual scale except that, the men on strike will not ho provided for.
