Another feather in the cap of Maoriland! This is probably the only country in the world in which TOASTED tobacco (grown and manufactured in the Dominion) is manufactured. There is more- to the toasting process than the uninitiated may imagine. It involves not only the use of a very special and elaborate plant but demands highly skilled labour. However, the result justifies all the trouble and expense, because the toasting deprives the leaf of nearly all its nicotine, develops flavour and bouquet, and renders it perfectly safe to smoke, to any extent. This cannot be said of other tobaccos which retain all their nicotine, and are bound, sooner or later, to affect the health of the smoker. These toasted tobaccos are produced by the National Tobacco Company, Ltd., (pioneers of the N.Z. tobacco industry). Popular brands: ‘Cut Plug No. 10” (the old smoker’s favourite full flavoured); “Riverhead Gold” (mellow and mild); “Cavendish.” (the sportsman’s smoke), and “Navy Cut No. 3” (a blend of choice leaf). 142
