Obituary

MR. ROBERT CHARLES NOEDL

The death took place at the Waipukurau Public Hospital this morning of Mr. Robert Charles Noedl, who had been a patient in that institution during the past fourteen montHs.

Deceased, who was aged 77 years, was born at Birmingham, England, and arrived in New Zealand at Lyttelton, by the sailing ship Tinton Abbey in 1874. He immediately found employment with a firm of butchers in Christchurch, and a year later married Miss Catherine Annie Cooper, a first cousin, who had been a shipmate with him on the voyage Io New Zealand. Some three years later, deceased left Christchurch and took up a position as shopman with the Gear Meat Co.. Ltd., in Wellington, where he remained for a number of years, finally leaving to go to Wanganui. About five years later the deceased established a butchery and bakery business at Fordell, finally selling out to advantage and going to New Plymouth to reside, where he was employed by Messrs. Bailey Bros, for a lengthy period. During the memorable gold-mining rush on the Ohinemuri goldfields the late Mr. Noedl went to Paeroa and established a butchery business, which he later disposed of to Mr. Frank Ott.

After living in Palmerston North for a while deceased went to Woodville, where he resided for 4 6 years, coming to Waipukurau eighteen months ago, when failing health necessitated his entering the local hospital. In the course of his travels in the Dominion deceased went through many varied and exciting experiences, including the removal of his wife, family, furniture and effects by dray through the Manawatu Gorge before the railway line was constructed.

The late Mr. Noedl was a member of the Ohinemuri Masonic Lodge. 107. His wife predeceased him at Woodville nine years ago.

The sympathy of a wide circle of friends throughout the Dominion is extended to the six daughters and three sons, who are left to mourn their loss. The members of the family are:—Mesdames M. So wry, Palmerston North (late of Waipukurau); W. Cheeseman, Sydney, N.S.W.; B. Dew, Waitara, E. Ford, Nelson; Cyril Nettleford, Dannevirke; F. Harrison, Auckland, and Messrs Henry Charles Noedl, New Zealand Railways, Waipukurau; R. A. Nodel, Palmerston North, and Captain Lewis Noedl, late of the Australian Imperial Forces, and now residing at Palmerston North. The funeral is to take place at the Waipukurau Cemetery to-morrow morning and the interment will be a private one.
