Gassed Out of Bar
BARMAN AND DRINKERS STRANGE VICTORIAN INCIDENT Rivalry between hotelkeepers in Victoria is carried to considerable lengths, as witness an incident at the week-end. At the interval during the football match at the Carlton ground on Saturday, when the bar of the ground hotel was crowded with thirsty barrackers, a nauseating gas was released in such volume that the place was cleared in a few seconds. The licensee, Mr Charles Orr, is president of the newly-formed Hotelkeepers’ Association of Victoria, which embraces 200 licensees, all of whom sell Richmond beer. Those outside the association cannot obtain supplies of this beverage, a particularly popular one with Victorian drinkers. Seven of the ten barmen in the ho-cl at the time were affected by the fumes. One of them had noticed a man enter and sprinkle some liquid on the floor a few seconds before the nauseating gas first showed its effect. The nature of the gas is not known, but the police are investigating.
