Reform Enthusiasm
OVER WAIPAWA SEAT. SELECTION OF A CANDIDATE. Remarkable enthusiasm was displayed by Reform Party supporters in the Waipawa electorate yesterday, when a meeting was called to take place at Waipukurau for the purpose of appointing delegates who will select a candidate to contest the Waipawa seat at the by-election rendered necessary by the death of the late Sir George Hunter. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting those present standing in silence, passed a resolution moved by the chairman, Mr T. Mason Chambers, expressing appreciation of the splendid services rendered to the community and to the' country at large by the late Sir George Hunter and by the late Mr John Winlove, the' latter of whom was a well-known Reform supporter of many years’ standing. Sympathy with their relatives was also expressed in the resolution. Though the chairman who convened the meeting had counted upon a large attendance, the interest shown exceeded even their greatest expectations, and some idea of the enthusiasm of supporters may be gauged from the fact that the Oddfelllows’ Hall, which had been enaged for the meeting, proved to be too small to accommodate the crowd, and the Municipal Theatre had to be used instead. Associated with the chairman were, Mr E. J. Herrick, president of the Reform group executive, and Mr F. Symes Budd, of Hastings, group organiser. Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., for the Hawke’s Bay electorate, was also present. Every section of the Waipawa electorate, from Porangahau and Takapau to Havelock North and Clive, was fully represented. The delegates elected will immediately set about making a Anal selection of a candidate, and a definite announcement will be made at an early date.
