Tragic Death

—<s> —— ON EVE OF SUCCESS. LABORATORY TRAGEDY. It is revealed that the tragic death of Dr. F. Arnall, a prominent Cardiff scientist, occurred when it was thought that he was on the eve of success in researches at the Technical College, Cardiff, which would have made him famous. A brilliant career has been cut short, and discoveries that would have startled the pharmaceutical world have been delayed. The doctor, with a team of research students, was experimenting

in an endeavour io bring his work to perfection in preparation for the annual conference of the Pharmaceutical Society, to be held in Cardiff in July. He had almost completed a formula establishing a new derivative of tartaric acid, and was handling some glass tubes in which the chemicals had been placed when, it is suggested, a little dampness must have entered one of the tubes, and an explosion shattered the apparatus in the laboratory.

Dr. Arnall and his assistants, including Mr R. Vernon Lloyd head of the pharmacy department of the college, Mr D. J. Jenkins, a Cardiff chemist, and Miss Eileen Melville, of Canton, Cardiff, were struck by the flying glass, but none of the injuries was really dangerous. A tribute is paid by the principal to Miss Melville, who, in spite of her injuries, rushed to his room to warn him of the accident before collapsing.
