LOCAL AND GENERAL

Holiday motor traffic was very heavy through Waipukurau yesterday, and cars from many parts of the North Island were noticed in the streets.

"V isiting, as well as local bowlers, were loud in their praises of the splendid condition of the Waipukurau rinks yesterday, and the green superintendent, Air R. Stabler, was the recipient of hearty I congratulations on the result of his wmrk. The first bitumen coating of the Porangahau road was completed by the contractors on Thursday evening and a big improvement has been effected. Near the main entrance tb the Public Hospital, the road has been sealed for its full width and a fine parking area for cars has been provided.

Prospects of a fine afternoon favoured the formal opening of the Waipukurau Golf Club which took place at theMarakeke links this afternoon. A cordial welcome was extended to the large gathering of visitors by the club’s president, Mr. H. R. Peacock, after which a mixed Canadian foursome, over twelve holes, was played. During the afternoon delicious refreshments were dispersed by the ladies’ committee.

A team representing the Waipukurau Fire Brigade, and comprising Superintendent J. A. Chambers, Foreman A. S. Annand, . Firemen J. Mcßride, D. Cairns, H. Woodward and H. A. Scherf left by the second express yesterday morning, en route for Taihape, where they will take part in the annual demonstrations held by the United District Fire Brigades’ Association. There was a large crowd of 'well-wishers on thestation platform to sec the team depart.

A meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Presbytery was held in Waipukurau on Tuesday last, when a call from Johnsonville (Wellington) was sustained on behalf of the Rev. A. E. Hunt, of Takapau. Air. Hunt leaves for his new charge at the end of this month. As no appointment has as yet been made for Takapau, the Rev. A. C. AlcLean of St. Andrew’s Waipukurau, will be responsible in the meantime for that district.

There was only a moderate attendance at the Afunicipal Theatre, Waipukurau, last night when the Napier Citizens’ Band gave a delightful concert. Under the conductorship of Lieutenant C. W. ’Connell, the band, which has recently been equipped with new instruments, gave a very fine performance, and each item was deservedly encored. The programme included the following: Alarch, ‘‘lnvicta.”; Overture, “Raymond”; Lyric, “The Temple Bells’’; Fantasia, “The Smithy in the Woods”; Descriptive, “In a Persian Afarket”; cornet solo, “Just a Afemory,” soloist Air G. Stigall; Bolero, from “Torquato Tasso”; “In a Chinese Temple Garden”; Hymn, “Rock of Ages”; Alarch, “Star of the Desert”; “God Save the King.”

An unrehearsed incident occurred as the Napier-Wellington relief express was leaving Waipukurau yesterday morning. The guard had signalled “right away” and the train moved off. getting as far as the Ruataniwha street "crossing, when there was a loud grinding of the Westinghouse brake being applied. It appears that the sliding door of the guard’s van had been left open to its fullest extent, and the shake of the train in moving off, dislodged it from the bar and it fell with a crash on to the side of the line. No time was lost' by the porters in putting the door back into position again, during the course of which no less than 26 motor cars and two motor cycles were held up on either side of the crossing.
