A cable message has been received from Sir James Parr, stating that Lady Parr is seriously ill in London. Constable D Ryan of Hastings is at present on duty in Waipukurau, relieving Constable Butler who has been granted a few days holiday. Mr T. M. Geddis, editor of the “Daily Telegraph” and Mr T. H. Ringland of Napier, were visitors to Waipukurau yesterday. Mrs T. J. Major, of Cardiff, Mrs J. Evans, of Pontypridd, and Mr Harvey Major, junr., of Cardiff, Engish visitors, are- at present the guests of Mr and Mrs H. E. Major, of Waipukurau. A wedding of local interest was. solemnised air Napier South on Monday, when Lydia May, youngest daughter of Mrs G. Fox, of ’Waipukurau, and Eiic Ericksen, of Napier, were united in matrimony. The ceremony was performed by the Rev Angus Chinle,Mr Thomas Charles Hales, of Wimbledon, a pioneer settler of the rmst Coast district, died in a private hospital in Danncvirkc, on Wednesday, and the interment' 5 ' took place at Porangahau to-day. The late Mr Hales had reached tho allotted span, being u 70 years of age. The Prime Minister of New Zealand has accepted an invitation from the President of the Irish Free State (Mr Cosgrove), to visit Dublin on Friday, when the University will confer the honorary doctorship of laws. Mr Coates then proceeds to Belfast, where he will be the guest of the Premier, Sir James Craig. Both Mr and Mrs Coates arc convalescing. Mr William Henry Cooper, a prominent and popular figure in the conir mercial circles of the East Coast district, and a man held in high esteem in many business houses, died at the Cook Hospital a few days ago, at the age of 68 years. The deceased was one of the oldest travellers on the Coast, and between Danncvirkc and Wairoa he handled the .bulk of the mercantile business for many years. Mr Cooper was an early volunteer in the Great Wr.id and although , too old for active service, he proved his worth in charge of the stores department at Trentham. Seven years ago Mr Cooper was predeceased by his wife. He is survived by two daughters and two sons,- Mrs Chas. Adair, of Gisborne, Mrs F. Bridges, Napier, Mr W. E. Cooper, Napier, and Mr- Cr.
