MAINTENANCE AND KJtiUUNSTRUGTION. REPORTS BY ENGINEERS. <a> At the meeting of the- Patangata County Counc.l yesterday the Engineer (Mr J, C. McLauchlan) reported that in the Eparaima riding a start has been made with the overhaul of the Wanstead road, 'One truck being put on to keep the crusher clear. The Maire gate bridge has ben completed and new piers and str ngers have been put in at the small bridge near H. Parsons’ homestead, the decking of which was good. The bridge into J. D, Ormond’s, has also’ been complete?! during this month. Jul the Patangata riding the Middle road metalling was completed so far as the carting is concerned shortly after last meeting and arrangements made with the contractor to lightly coat a mile of the To Kura road, the price of this metal being fixed at 5s per yard. This has now been completed except for the stone breaking which is in hand. While this -work was i<n jirogrcss W, Marsh who was spread ng had the misfortune to crush his thumb while helping to tip one of the metal drays, and has been off work about two weeks. Minor repairs have been carried out to a bridge and culvert on the Middle, road. Tho Ma in road is in fs7r condition but requires grading again The approach fences to the Patangata bridge are being erected and a portion of the R.ver road below Patangata is being raked in with the grader. Gero rid ng has had the following work carried out: The carting out of the Ha worn road metal was completed just before Easter, 932 cubic yards being delivered, and the stone breaking has been in hand since. The grad ng in this riding is now completed tho Spring Bush road being overn. . also the Mangarara and Ma a ......u. The contractor for the approach, road to the Patangata bridge is n w nearmg completion, the fine spell of weather allowing the work to proceed without interruption. The surfacing of tne new br.dgc with Bitumin is now In hand and should be completed to inorrow. In the- ramumu riding the surfaceman has been engaged for most of the month in blinding the metal with clay and raking in same with the small grader, but owing to the continued dry weather the metal is still loose. The four horse grader will overhaul the Pura pura Hill during this week.

Work in the Pourcrc riding was reported on as follows: Surfacework only has been carried out in this riding, the dry weather causing the limestone f-tnetal to break up and this is rough in parts. Clay blinding has been used m parts, of the Pourerere road with some success. Patching metal is also required on the Long Range road when a lorry is available. The shingle length of the Pourcrc road should be rak-id in with the small grader, this will be done shortly

In the Mangatarata riding the overhaul of the Mangatarata road now .about completed, well over 2000 yards of pit metal being delivered and this road should do for some time. Three, bridges on this road are badly in need of repair, the top chords n two truss bridges being rotten. Timber has been ordered to replace same.

I intend to send the four horse grader out next week to grade out the metal which has rutted to some extent with traffic. This will leave the road In good condition.

The Overseer (Mr R. J. Sidwell) reporting on the work in the Porangahau riding stated that the Cooks Tooth road was practically completed to G., Blacks. All the culvert timber for the Cooks Tooth extensionis stacked on the road. Timber for the Whangareku road to the extent of 3448 feet was placed on the site. Seventy-four motor drivers’ licenses were issued up to the end of April.
