MANNIX IN DEFENCE.
HOSTILITY OF HUGHES. "STANDS BY EVERY SYLLABLE.” ATTEMPT TO DISCREDIT HIM. LONDON, August 10. Archbishop Mannix, interviewed in London, declared that there was more in the Government’s attitude than they wish the public to realise. The hostility of Hughes and oothers like him was due to Mannix helping to defeat conscription and save democratic Aus tralia from military despotism, and also because Mannix had defended Ireland from persistant systematic vilifications in cables through London which are the only cables Australians ever get. Deliberate attempts were made to discredit him in America, but they fail ed. He stood by every syllable of his speeches.
