SEDITION IN INDIA.

Plot discovered in time.

Delhi, May 10

An important prosecution under recent Defence of India Act is progressing at Lahore against eightytwo persons alleged to have indulged in a seditious conspiracy against the British Government, engineered by Indians returning from America. The origin of the conspiracy wfjs found in a movement on the Pacific coast, directed by one Sai Dyal, in that the administration woui'd'ho weakened by the wav. The emissaries returned to India in considerable numbers endeavouring to stir up trouble, plainly in Pnnjauband United Provinces. Thqy sought to collect arms and explosives, circulate seditious literature, tamper with the troops and obtain funds from robber es. A series of dacoities and murders have taken place. Owing to theigilance of the police and the co-operation of the people, seizures of bombs were made, the plans detected and the ringleaders arrested. Several qf those implicated made a full confession of the plot, which failed at the very beginning. The plotters failed to win the sympathy pf their own people in India. Though the majority were Sikhs the Government had every assistance from Sikh leaders, who keenly resented the discreditable proceedings. The attempts to persuade Mahoramedana to join the revolt also failed, though Mahommedans are among the accused.
