VALEDICTORY.

At the conclusion of the Territorial parade on Friday evening, Capt. Wardrop, who is leaving New Zealand with the Seventh Reinforcements, was the recipient of a presentation from the men. Sergt. Wig/.ell, in making the presentation, regretted losing the Captain, hut considered that this was more than recompensed by the fact that he was leaving the company to serve his country. He had always been a splendid officer and a good man to be under, and anything non-coms, or men wanted to know, he would always go out of his way to tell them. The speaker referred to Capt. Wardrop’s connection with the Sonth African war, which would now stand him in good stead. He had been lenient, too much so at times, and his place would be hard to till. The Sergeant then presented the Captain, on behalf of Woodville portion of “A ” Company, with a handsome travelling rug, together with their good wishes, and hoped that when he came back to New Zealand, he would again settle in Woodville

Capt. Wardrup, in reply, expressed great pleasure with the present, more especially as it came direct from the men. He had been four years as O.C. here, and had always enjoyed himself. No officer could w’ish to be in charge of a better lot of men. He knew he had been lenient, but had profited by it. He urged the men to treat his successor as they had treated him, and he was sure they would get. on well together. He would like some of the local men in Tx’entham with him, and gave his assurance that he would assist them. He again thanked the men for the gift.

The gathering dispersed with the singing of, “For he’s a JollyGood Fellow,” and cheers for the Captain.
