OUR AMAZING COUNTRY!
Great Britain really is an amazing country. At the end of last month the National Relief Fund stood at £4,514,000. The Queen’s “Work for Women” Fund reached £130,000, and the Indian Soldiers’ Fund has reached £118,268. Various newspaper funds stand now at a total of nearly £2,000,000. The loan of £10,000,000 to Belgium, without interest, has been followed by one of £5,000,000 to Roumania. The Trea?ury and the Bank of England between them hold more than, enough gold to pay off the whole of the currency notes - issued and the banknotes in circulation. The 'Government has undertaken to advance to the national dye scheme a loan corresponding to the amount of share capital subscribed up to a total of £1,000,000, and in addition has undertaken to grant to the company for the purposes of research an amount not exceeding £IOO,OOO. We are also sending to Russia, France, and Belgium munitions of war, clothing, and food. The war itself (according to Sir Felix Schuster) is now costing directly and indirectly fully £13,000,000 a week, and when the new army gets to work it. will probably cost more. We have already spent on the war £200,000,000. “I never saw such a superstitious fellow as Hixby.” “WTiat’s his latest?” “ Why, he’s been trying all the morning to prove that 1915 is an unlucky year. He’s manipulated the figures 1-9-1-5 with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the rule-of-three.” “W T hat has he found that seems unlucky?” “Nothing, except that when he added l-9-l-o together and subtracted the total, 16, from 1915 it left 1899.” “Yes “ And that was the year he married.
