PRIVATE RAPHAEL, M.P. “ Sir Herbert Raphadel is not m, but Private Raphael will see you.” That was the little explanation given when a London journalist called at the house of Sir Herbert Henry Raphael, Bart., M.P. for South Derbyshire. Sir Herbert, one of the wealthiest and one of the busiest men in the House of Commons, has just enlisted as a private in the Sportsman’s Battalion. “1 am going clown to live in a hut with the other men and have my share of the hardships and hard work of soldiering,” he told “The Daily Mirror yesterday. “An officer told me that I 'might find the life rough if I had not got a servant. I don’t want a servant. I want to rough it, and I want other young men to come and do the same.” Men are hard t 0 satisfy, yet what is more unsatisfactory than a satisfied man? On the pedestal of a statue of Joan of Arc, at Longwy, the Germans have engraved the following inscription: “The maid of Orleans was always the enemy of the English. The French are to-day fighting by the side of the English, hence Joan of Arc cannot be with the French. She is with us.”
