SAGACIOUS ELEPHANT.

Tho elephant’s brain is always actively working, and his little eyes take in far more than it is imagined ho sees. Hagcuheck’s circus of animals from Germany was parading in Chicago, eight elephants being part of tho display.

Tho animals appeared to bo quite sleepy, tho day being warm and showery. They plodded along unmindful of tho crowd of happy hoys cheering about them. Suddenly the bond elephant discovered a delivery wagon horse down on tho street-car tracks. Ho had fallen in a-fit of sickness. The elephant made for him. and with a twist sot him on his feet. The horse, badly frightened. fell down again. Tho elephant set him up again. Once more the horse ie!l down. This time the .elephant patiently set him mi, and he'd him up until his keeper ordered his release. Mr. Elephant. then ambled on, satisfied ho had done his duty.
