New Plymouth, Jan. 15. By some means the gas escaping from No. 2 bore of the Taranaki Petroleum Company was iginited at 1.20 this afternoon while boring operations at a depth of nearly 3000 feel was in operation. The whole structure was in imminent danger for some hours, but eventually the flames were suppressed by steam, when the place seemed doomed. Large gangs of men worked strenuously smothering the bore with clay. The damage ultimately was found to be very trifling. Wellington, Jan. 19. In connection with the raid on Chinese premises in Hainingstreet, several Europeans were charged with being found in a cornmop gapiing-house, and were fined £2 "each, jp defaplt seven days’ imprisonment. The ,changes against the Chinese were adjourned till Thursday next. Mr Edward Seager, well known for many years in foundry and engineering circles, died on Saturday night, pged He aprjved in Wellington 40 years ago, apd was the father of the engineering in? dustry in the city.
