The Police Inspector (Mr Ellison) reported in scathing terms on the state of the yard and general sanitary arrangements of this hotel. A manure heap weighing about 40 tons was lying in the yard, and had been there for about 20 years. The former occupants had not conducted the hotel as it should be. There had been four licensees in this hotel in the last two years, and it seemed that only the roughest class of bush trade had been encouraged. He would like to see the Bench grant the license for three months only. Mr Smith said the complaints referred to former occupants, not to Mr Monaghan. Mr Monaghan was doing everything in his power to remedy the defects about the place. The Magistrate concurred with Inspector Ellison regarding the way in which theJiouse had been conducted in the He expressed the opinion that the time had arrived when a permanent constable should be appointed iu Makuri. The license was granted, subject to the recommendations of the Inspector being carried out. The Magistrate expressed the pleasure of the Bench at the manner in which the Police Department was assisting them in licensing matters. DUDLEY ARMS, MANGATAINOKA. R. Grerar applied for a license. The Police Inspector’s report condemned the place as being generally out of repair and requiring new far niture, new papering, and repainting. Inspector Ellison said that the licensee appeared to be the scapegoat in this case. If the hotel was not to be kept in a fit state of repair to accommodate the public then it was no use granting a license. Me Tosswill explained that Mr Grerar had only just taken oyer this hotel, and was endeavouring to have it put in proper order. The recommendations of the police would be given effect to. The Inspector said matters had considerably improved when he visited the place that morning. The license was granted subject to the necessary repairs being done, and more furniture being provided. WOODVILLE HOTELS. The police report in every case was highly satisfactory, and licenses were granted as follows : Club Hotel (John Fabian), Masonic Hotel (Louisa Manson), Post Office Hotel (W. A. Mr E. Gilbertson and Constable Oittadini gave evidence in support of the report, the former stating that he had been unable to get feed for his horse at the hotel, and the latter stating that the licensee had got into lazy, dirty habits. The Bench unanimously decided that Mr Lovejoy was not a suitable person to conduct a hotel, and gave the owners of the premises three months’ notice to find another li-1 ceusee. The license was granted for that period. | HERBERTVILLE HOTEL. I Application for renewal of license, , J. M. Fisher,

Mr Gothard appeared for the applicant, and Mr Lloyd for the owner. The district constable’s report stated that the house generally required renovating, and the stables weie badly out of repair. A bathi jom also was required.
