Battalion Parade.

Wednesday was a miserable day, and not even the most optimistic individual could be cheerful under the depressing conditions. What w'ould have been a brilliant function was, as a result of the weather, robbed of most of its brilliancy. We refer to the Battalion Parade of tbe Fifth Enahine Battalion. Only one visiting corp turned up, the Dannevirke Rifles. These with the Woodviile Rifles and Ruahine Battilion Band were inspected by Major-General Babington. The companies paraded at the Drill Hall, and alter inspection by the General were marched to the Recreation Ground where field mar oeuvres and skirmishing were gone through.

It bad been the General’s intention to take the battalion on to the hills on Mr Nelson’s property and hold a sham fight, but this, of course, was impracticable on such a wet day. Addressing the men, after the parade, Major-General Babington expressed himself as very pleased with the parade, and complimented tbe companies on their appearance. The parade state was as follows: Staff.—Major General Babington, Major Joyce, Quarter-master Cairns, Quarter-master-sergt Harding, and Sergt-Major McNair,

Woodville Rifles. —Capt, Nelson and Lieutenants Horne and Rapley ; 33 men, Dannevirke Rifles.—Cupt. Harrison and Lieutenants Davidson and Adams ; 30 men. Euahino Battalion Band.—Bandmaster Lawrence and 16 men. After the parade Quartermaster Cairns entertained the members of the Dannevirke Rifles at tea in the Drill Hall. This thoughtful act on the part of the Quartermaster was highly apprecia ted.
