" UNDER GASLIGHT."

As usual, the Alexandra Hall was packed to suffocation last night when the Taylor-Carrington company produced for the first time in Woodville the sensational play, “Under Gaslight.” The drama is full of sensational incidents, and in the hands of this clever company left nothing to be desired. Space will not permit of our going into detail regarding the individual characters sustained, but one and all acquitted themselves admirably. The scenery was beautifull but the want of stage accommodation spoilt the effect. The scene in which an express train crossed the stage at full speed was completely marred by one of the carriages playing up. It kicked up its hind lege, and jumped over the next carriage. When will we get a decent stage in Woodville ? The company will return in a few months’ time, and will produce a new play. MAORI HAKA. Considerable interest is being taken in the visit here on Friday evening of a comoany of haka and poi dancers from Hamua. It is a long time since Woodville has been visited by a troupe of Maori performers, and there should be a packed house to welcome the Hamua natives.
