School Committee.

The monthly meeting of the Woodviilu School Committee was held on Monday evening. There were present—Messrs -Harnett (chairman), Crops', Hugh (secretary), Wigzeil, Grieves, Spink, Kirkpatrick, and Beattie. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from Miss •Cowman, who asked for leave of absence until December next, as she was going on a trip to the Home Country.—Leave of absence granted. A letter was also received from the Board, re the removal of Miss Anderson. The letter stated that the whole matter was referred to the Department, who fixed (he date of her retirement.—Received. The Headmaster reported as follows I have to report for the month as follows Total school roll, 381; highest attendance, 3G2; average attendance, 331. The average attendance at the Primary Department has been 319 for the quarter. If the weather be at all favourable until the end of Juno, there is no doubt of our obtaining the services of a teacher to fill the place vacated by Miss Anderson. Yon will note that there is still an average of nO pupils absent every day. An average attendance of 330 for the year would entitle the school to the services of another assistant. I need not say that this would be an immense gain to the school, and one well worth making every effort to obtain. The repairing of the drain and the gravelling of the wet part of the ground have made the playground very clean and comfortable.

The ground for the garden has been dug, but the fencing lias not been completed. The heavy wind on Saturday evening wrenched the bolt from the bottom of the front door. Will you please decide whether or not 24th May will be observed as a school holiday. I have received notice that the examination of the school will be hold during the last week in June. All the firewood (6 cords small wood and 2 cords Jogs) has been delivered and stacked. Agreed, that there be no holiday on the 24th May, as the examinations were so near. Agreed, that application be made to the Board for a grant to enable a proper pipe drain to be put through the school ground. Agreed, that the visiting committee report to the next meeting the cost of putting a roof over the firewood which is slacked at the end of the playground. Messrj Kirkpatrick and Hugh were appointed the visiting committee for the month. Accounts amounting to £2O Is 9d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
