HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

Wellington, May 14.

The Industries and Commerce Department has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, May 12th :

Mutton. —The market is dull and trade in all classes is slow. Prices are barely maintained. The average price lor Canterbury mutton to-day is 4d for lightweights and B|d for heavyweights. North Island mutton is quoted at 3fd, best quality B|d. The lamb market is steady, and there isagood demand or all classes. The average price for Canterbury brands as 4fd, other than Canterbury is 'quoted at 4sd. Beef.—The market is dull with scarcely any demand. The average , prices are B|d and 2Jd for bind and quarters respectively. ’ ... Butter.—The market is steady with a very good demand. Moderate supplies are coming forward. The . average price for choice New Zealand is 101 s, Danish 105 s per cwt. Cheese.—Market quiet. The average price for white makes is 60s per cwt. Less demand exists for colored at 62s per. cwt. There is a better demand, for hemp, the average price g.f.a.q. Wellington on spot to-day being £3l 10s. AprilJape shipments are quoted at £Bl per ton. A, good demand exists for all deBoriptionso f wool. HArIKINS AND COMPANY’S WEEKLY REPORT. ..Messrs Hawkins and Company report Saturday’s sale as being a very . satisfactory one. Prices are as follow :—Pigs: Weanere (small), 8s 9d to 4sßd; small stores, 6s 9d to 8s 8d ; stores, 14s 6d ; horses were sold
