IN SOLITARY STATE.

It was a country town of tho, sleepy order, wherein the tastes of the inhabitants did not turn Lo things dramatic. But it had boon included in the inuring company's -itinerary, and the advance manager had certainly done liis level best, in the way of posting the town with picture.-! representing thrilling .scenes in the drama. .Still business .refused to boom, and file buievolenf old gentleman who surveyed the liiried placards outside tho theatre bad an air of mildly wondering what on earth bad induced anyone to s.-nd .siieli a production to the place. As ho gazed, a tearful youngster made bis way slowly down the gallery steps. Ho was sobbing as though bis heart would break, and the 'old gentleman melted in kindly pity. “Why do you cry, little fellow?” ho adeed. '“Was the jday (on han-ow’ng? Were your heartstrings wrung at J be suffering,? -of the beautiful heroine?” “iX-no. guv’iicr!” sobbed the little fellow', “it —it ain’t that: h-bnt I not afraid 'of hc-he-ing there Jill by myself. ’ “I ’opect,” said little Tommy, looking up from his botany-book, “that flowers ,sheet up hecau.se they have p:s----t-ilis inside of ’em I”

A J UPITER PHENOMENON. An astronomical phenomenon has boon brought to the notice of astronomers by tao Rev. T. E. R. Phillips, the director of the Jupiter section of the Hntish Astronomical Association, based on some observations to him from Ceylon by Major P. B. Moles worth, R.E. It is pointed out that the most famous marking on J upi tor is its great Red Spot—a marking that has been soon at times even since Jupiter was first observed with the telescope in the IGth century—but it Iras greatly varied in its colouring aild its visibility. It is situated in the south equatorial belt of Jupiter, in whoso southern edge it makes a bay. . Within tho south equatorial belt, during tho last five or six yeans, there lias come into existence a largo dark spot, wliicli lias also varied greatly in size, in some yeans stretching out over a length of 9()dcg., in others contracting to not more than a third that length. 'The great red spot and tiro dark spot move in the south equatorial belt at different rates, and in 1903 the dark spot oame up to and passed tile red spot. But here came in the inexplicable phenomenon, lor the dark spot neither appeared to pass over, under, or round the red spot, but the instant that tho dank material came up to the edge of tho groat) rod spot the dark material appeared 'at tlho other edge, and so grew. In tho course of a few weeks the dark area will again overtake the great rod spot, ’and Mr, Phillips calls upon all Jupiter observers to watch the planet diligently, iso that if tho material of the dark area ho observed again to bo transferred, to all appearance, instantaneously to the other side of the great red ■spot, same explanation of tho manner may be fonthcom in g.
