A sensational fight between a railway foreman and a gang of navvies ii reported from North Carolina. Tbe navvies, who were Hungarians and Italians, were dissatisfied with their treatment, and made an organised attack on the foreman during the dinner hour. The navvies made a rush to overpower him but he wielded the bar with such effect that he had beaten seven of the men to death. Tbe rest of the navvies fled.

Mr Thomas Martin, of Crosse’s Estate, who was driving out from here to Kumeroa with his family on Sunday afternoon, had a narrow escape from a serious accident. As the trap approach -d Mr Gilbert’s place, a motor-car was observed coming along, and Mr Martin, who had a restless horse, held up his hand for the car to stoop. The driver of the latter took no notice, however, and came on. Mr Martin’s horse made for the side of the road, and capsized the trap, smashing it badly.
