<e>— Tho usual monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday, when there were present—Crs Harris (chairman), Pattison, Goldfinch, Lynch, Morgan, Hughes and Mouthy. Leave ef absence was granted to Or Nelson, on the motion of the chairman. England’s hill. Tho Chairman reported that the deposit had been paid over to Messrs Watson & Horne, on their giving the Council a guarantee that there would be no further liability in connection with Ehbstt and Campbell’s contract at England’s Hill, CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read and dealt with as follows: From G. S. Ballamine, asking permission to remove fence four feet on to the road to allow of a hedge being trimmed.—Held over till next meeting for further enquiry. From J. H. Hedermun, claiming £5 for extra work done on Grainger’s road in filling approaches to culvert. —Not entertained. From H. G. Barrow, asking fur more metal on Kearney’s road.— Received. From E. J. Gothard, forwarding a legal opinion re cattle grazing on the roads.— Or Goldfinch considered that notice boards should he put up, particularly in the Maharalnra riding, where there was a ivgulir camping ground for stock.— Alter discussion, his proposition was agreed to. From the same-, re his charges for Gorge Bridge Commission. He stated that his charge was only half what the other solicitors charged local bodies at the same Commission. —Received.

Fiona the R ngitikei County engineer, asking for a report on the working of the grader.—Left in the hands of the chairman and over-seer.

From the Charitable Aid Board, convoying copy of schedule of estimates showing revenue required and how it i? lo be raised.—Received.

From General Manager of New Zealand Railways, stating that the Council must either accept his offer of £IOO to erect a concrete wall unconditionally or not at all.—Received. From Superintendent of Electric Lines, enclosing a statement of receipts and expenditure oftheMangarawa Telephone Bureau, and calling upon the Council to pay the whole of the amount guaranteed, viz.. £9 15s. —Agreed that the amount be paid, and that the guarantors he called upon to refund the money to the Council. From the District. Health Officer, advising his temporary absence from Napier.—Received. From the Treasury, forwarding a statement shewing the allocation of the cost of the BMlauce - Gorge bridge.—Received. DEPUTATION. Mr S. Hutching waited on the Council, and asked that a footbridge be placed over the Manga-atua stream on Bellshaw’s road ; also that the road be metalled leading from Dickens’ corner to Smart’s hill, and that the fence on the Manga-atua school hill be repaired. The Chairman said that the Council would have to husband its finances very carefully, and he did not think there was the slightest chance of metalliug being done. The fence referred to would have to be repaired. Regarding the footbridge, the overseer recommended a log being put over the stream, and he (the chairman) did not think the Council would grant a footbridge. Mr Hutching thanked the Council and withdrew. Mr Gregory waited on the Council, and asked permission to clean out a culvert on the Crosse’s Rotate road.

As some opposition was shown to the request, it was agreed to refer it to the chairman and Ct Nelson to see what should be done. SLAUGHTERING LICENSE. The application of A. T. Thompson, Kumeroa, for a slaughtering license was granted. overseer’s report. The overseer reported as follows ; WORK DONE. Waiurahara Biding.—Had a stone groin put in at the bridge near Edwards’ on the Valley road ; Gaisford road, repaired a pipe culvert; Sturdy’s road, filled in the hole washed out by the large wooden culvert, and put some planks on the upper side of road to protect the filling; Grainger’s road, had the swampy place filled in and the drain cleaned out on the side of the road, and made a crossing at the small creeks to get a dray over. The contractor has finished metalling Kearney’s and Ross’ roads. He has also finished the formation on Grainger’s road. Kujiekoa Riding. —Took up the old bridge by Little’s, and cut a channel across the road aud built a new bridge; also built a new bridge on Anstis’ road near Peart's. Had 3000 ft of totara timber squared on the river bed, and had it carted to the bridges near Little’s, IVavt’s and Colter’s. On Otawhao road 1 put in a sot of pipes near Pattison’s. The contract for metalling the Otope read is finished, and I had the watertables cleaned out on the same road. Carlson's Hill deviation, had a portion of the road widened. Some of die metal was used for patching the road. M axga-atua Riding.— Had a set of pipes put in near the Mauga-atua bridge on Harding’s road. The contract for metalling Ormond’s road is finished, Wooiwillk Riding. The contract for metalling Oxford road is finished.

Another log is required there. _ Maiiab.vjiaua Bidino. —A set of pipes is required at Onngi flat, and a small box culvert on the Onngt Station road. Cr Goldfinch entered a strong protest against the delay taking place with regard to Graham’s contract on England’s Hilh Ho blamed the overseer for not insisting on the work being pushed on.__ After considerable discussion, the chairman promised to bear in mind the necessity of pushing on the work as soon as possible. Agreed, that the log be put across the stream ou Dellshaw’s road. Agreed, that the work at Oringi be authorised. Agreed, that work required on the

road from Graham’s and Grainger’s toGriogi(he!d over from last meeting) be done. The overseer urged the necessity of something being done to improve the drainage near the Maharahara railway station.—Agreed, that the drain be cleaned out. GENERAL. Agreed, that the gates on the Wharite road be removed, also that some metalling required at the Saddle road be done. Or Lynch stated that Mr Nichols required some repairs made to his road.—Agreed that these be done. Or Pattisou stated that Mr Kemp had interviewed him, and asked the Council to take steps to divert the water from flowing on to his property from the bill near Mr Mackie’s. He (Or Pattison) had gone over the ground with Mr Kemp, and had agreed as to what should be done. This was to dig a drain leading through Mr Bartosh’s property, and take the water off that way. He moved that this be done. The chairman objected to the establishment of a precedent, as this would undoubtedly mean. An easy way out in the present instance might mean a knotty course in the future. Eventually, Cr Pattison agreed to withdraw his motion, pending the chairman's inspection of the locality, Agreed, that the overseer have the drain cleaned out in front of Mr Storrie’s place at Kumeroa. Agreed, to pat a notice on the Upper Otawhao bridge near Mr Kinoear’s limiting the loads to be taken across it. Cr Pattison desired to know when there w-.s a likelihood of Mr Robertson making a start with the Otawino road bridge. He considered it should take precedence of the bridge near Cotter’s. He moved that Messrs Robertson and Rosenfeldt be asked to go out and square the limber for the bridge. Or Lynch seconded the motion, which was carried. The chairman reported having inspected the reserve which Mr Beaumont wished to lease. He had discovered that there was no definite information as to which reserves the Council had a title to. He thought the time had arrived when the Council should have this matter placed on a proper footing. It was agreed that the chairman go to Wellington in conjunction with the member for the d.strict and have the matter settled as to what reserves the Council had a title to. THE GORGE COMMISSION. It was decided to enter a formal protest against the award of the Commissioner in the matter of the Gorge bridges and road. ACCOUNTS
