The County Clerkship.

ME NICHOLSON EESIGNS,

Somewhat of a surprise was sprung upon Conn I y (Councillors ut yesterday's meeting when Mr W. Nicholson, who has been clerk to the Council since the creation of the Woodville County, tendered bis resignation. In doing so Mr Nicholson staled that he had accepted another position, and found the strain too great upon himself to carry on the duties of both offices. He had taken the step with regret, but it was with a view of bettering himself. The chairman said he was deeply sorry to lose the services of Mr Nicholson. He had been their clerk ever since the inception of the Council, and he (the chairman) felt sure that he was voicing the opinion of the whole Council when he said that Mr Nicholson had carried out his duties with the greatest satisfaction to all parties. As a member of the Finance Committee, he (Cr Harris) had come into close contact with their clerk, and had always found that Mr Nicholson h id everything in the most complete order. He was pleased to hear that Mr Nicholson was bettering bis position, but he would find it very hard as chairman to get on without that gentleman. Cr Morgan expressed the keenest regret at Mr Nicholson’s resignation. He could assure that gentleman that he bad never heard a single complaint from the ratepayers regarding him.

Or Goldfinch said he had always found Mr Nicholson ready with hia advice and willing to assist councilors in every way. It would be very hard to replace him. Cr Lynch said lie had not had long experience of the Council, but both at the creation of the county and at all times since, he and others had always found Mr Nicholson straight and up-to-date. Or Paltison said he was sure be was voicing the opinion of the whole of the Kumeroa ratepayers in saying that Mr Nicholson had been a splendid secretary to the Council. It would be very hard to replace him. Cr Moorby said he had been told by the ratepayers in the Maharahara when he stood for the Conned that he would always get any advice and assistance from the clerk, and he certainly had found that true. He hoped that Mr Nicholson would continue to better himself.

Mr Nicholson, in returning thanks, said his experience as clerk to the Woodville County Council had been a very pleasant one. The Councillors had always treated him with the greatest respect and courtesy, and it had been a pleasure to carry out his duties. It was gratifying to him to know that he had given satisfaction, and he hoped the same good feeling would exist between the Council and his successor.

The Chairman moved, and Cr Pattison seconded, “ That this Council receives Mr Nicholson’s resignation with regret, and records its high appreciation of his services as clerk and treasurer, ho having given complete satisfaction at all times to the Council and the ratepayers.”

The motion was carried with ac olamation.
