The Totallsator.

The Wellington Council of Ghurcnea has earned resoulutions urging the Government to legislate, as soon as Parliament meets, for the absolute suppression of the totalizator, and deploring the fact that certain churches continue to bold raffl 'S, etc., in connection whh bazaars. Some pointed remarks on the • totalisator were made at the Police Court by Mr 0. 0. Kettle, S.M., at Auckland. A youth had been remanded on a charge of stealing i money from his employer, in order to receive the probation officer’s report. The report was not favourable. It stated that tbe ycuth frequented racecourses. Mr Kettle, who has frequently spoken against the attendance of boys and youths at racecourses, stated that in bis opinion the totalisator should never have been legalised by the State. The machine was a great temptation to men and youths, and since it had been introduced, it had demoralised the youth of the colony. The remarks made by some members of the House of Representatives when the totalisator was legalised had been borne out. Tbs detrimental effects of the machine were being fully realised in ttiis colony.
