Fires sprang upon the oniskins of the town, and many settlers spent the night fighting the flames. In the town itself the gale played havoc with chimney pots, windows and sheds. The belltower of St. John’s Church was blown down and shattered to pieces, and the big plate-glass windows of one establishment were blown in. A late message states that the ga'c has caused soiious fires in the Msknretu district. Two sawmills have been burned and five cottages.
