DEFEAT OF MR BALFOUR. ROUT OF THE CONSERVATIVES. London, Jan. 15. In the contest for the Manchester seat the figures were :—F. G. Horridge (L) G 403 ; A. J. Balfour 4423. Winston Churchill (L) defeated Hicks (C) for the North West Manchester seat. Tiie returns so far show that there are returned —Twelve Unionists, two Union-ist-Freetraders. thirty-four Liberals, eleven Laborites, and seven Nationalists. Thera is intense excitement at Manchester and Salford North over Mr Balfour’s (the ex-Pretnier’s) defeat. Mr Balfour, addressing the Conservative Club, acknowledged the gravity of the disaster, but predicted that the Liberal tenure of office will be brief. When the dissolution occurred the strength of the parties were : Unionists 368, Liberals 219, Nationalists 83. Speaker one~a Unionist majority of 67.
