Fatal Accident.

j - -o- | DEATH OF Mil W. KENDALL. 1 Wo regret to record tho death of Mr W. Bond'd!, a well-known resident of Woodville, which occurred as tho result of an accident near Fordell on Wednesday last. We quote particulars of the accident ! from the Chronicle John Law-on, employed by Mr Forsyth, of Mangamalui, started from Forded in the morning with a waggon diawn by five horses. Tiic waggon was loaded with timber and grass seed, and a bridge carpenter named William Dendall, aged 68, was riding on the load. When a li't’o more that hdf way down the steep Kauangaroa Hill, some of the timber touched the shaft horse, which began lo plunge. The leaders followed suit, with the result that the team got out of control and bolted at a terrific sr-o.cd down, the incline. The brake was put on, but had no effect. When approaching the bend near Mr Young’s re.-idence another waggon, with throe horses, was S“en ascending the hill and a collision seemed imminent.but at this point the bolting term went over the bank. Tire speed at which they wore travelling was so great that the horses broke away from the w aggon, and fell in a heap a few yards furtner on, while tho waggon turned a complete somersault. The driver was thrown clear of the waggon and escaped with a few bruises and scratches, but Lend ill got mixed up with the timber and was buried beneath tile sacks of grass seed. As soon as Lawson pulled himself together he procured assistance and extricued the old man. It was seen that ho was seriously hurt, and medical assistance was telegraphed for. Mr D. Biggie went from Fordell with a conveyance, and tHe injured man was brought into Fordell, where ho was attended by Dr Wall, who bad gone out by the midday mail train. It was ascertained that Bendall’s chest had been injured, some of the ribs on the right side having been broken and the lungs, it was feared, injured. The unfortunate man was brought in to the Wanganui Hospital and attended to, but he succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Deceased, whose wife resides at Woodville, had been contracting in this district for a number of years. Much sympathy will be felt for Mrs Bendall in her tragic bereavement.
