Wanganui, June 27. It now transpires that the body found on Waitotara beach about a Week ago was that of Mrs A. W. F. Halcombe, well known throughout N. Z., and daughter of the late W. Swainson, of the Hutt. Deceased was aged 59, and her husband predeceased her three years ago. She was a talented and well-known artist. Evidence points to snicide in the Patea river while en route from Marton to Waitara to visit her son. Deceased had been depressed and in ill health. Waipawa, June 27. A deputation of Waipukurau residents presented a petition to the Hon. O. H. Mills last night praying Government to acquire the Mount Herbert estate for close settlement. Those applicants for homestead sections in the Argyll settlement who were not allowed to participate in the ballot intend testing the question in the Supreme Court. Several are men of means. A great deal of comment was caused owing to the fact that three of the font applicants allowed to ballot were relatives. Welington, This day. The steamer Tokomarn, which arrived yesterday from London via Hobart, has been quarantined at Somes Island on account of Cne oatbreak of smallpox at Tasmania. It is probable that accommodation for some of the patients in the overcrowded Snnnyside asylum and Mount View asylum will be provided at Hokitika and Nelson. Che:stohubch, This day. Mr T. Parata, member for the Southern Maori electorate, states that considerable indignation exists among the Southern Maoris over the gazetting of Mahuta as King of the Maoris. Mr Parata will make a strong protest 'during the debate on the Adjre«s-in-Reply, and will present to the House a protest from the Southern Council.
