The Pahiatua people are evidently alive to the requirements of a progressive era in the colony-s history, and are practically determined that they mean to keep their town abreast of the times. A meeting was held on Friday night at which it was decided that a poll should be taken on the proposal to raise a loan for necessiry'drainage works, and for the purchase of the gas works. The object of the latter portion of the proposal was to buy the gas works provided the gas canie up to expectations. One ratepayer was so enthusiastic en the matter of the gas that he offered to guarantee the interest for twelve months if the Council would give him the profits. We congratulate finr neighbors on their common sense in so thoroughly grasping the necessities of their town, and only wish we were writing the same about Woodville. As we have reiterated again aod again, ate we going to allow ourselves to be left right behind. Why cannot one of .our more enthusiastic ratepayers or even councillors promulgate and have discussed a similar scheme to that about to be adopted in Pahiatua. Of course the gas works are a thing of the future, which, if the present is attended to, will look after itself. But what we do want is a water supply. Good old water supply ! It has given us food for many a leader, and yet we plug away still wanting it. Will not some one take up the cudgels and commence the fight which we are sure will result in a victory for the water supply ? The town should be well able to support a loan for such a necessary purpose, and we adjure our Council again to take up this burning question. What a fitting inauguration of the new century it would be to see Woodville in the possession of an adequate water supply.
