Pongaroa.
(From our Own Correspondent). April 15. Settlers appear to obtain better prices for their sheep in this distriet, judging by your sub-leader of the 10th inst., than those in the Makuri. The following the prices paid by the principal buyer for a freezing company :—4-tooth fat wethers, 10s ; store wethers, 8s Gd ; fat ewes, 7s—delivery taken at the settlers' yards.' Lambs that were bought at Is Gd per head last year brought 7s per head at the sale yards in Pahiatua this year off the shears. The Pongaroa Football Club are opening the season with a dance at the Town Hail on the 19th inst. The unfortunate man Morgan was carried out from here to Makuri en Friday last. Twenty willing men left here with the stretcher, and they were quite done up by the state of the road when they reached Makuri. Mr R. H. Reaney takes charge of this district, vice Captain Turner, who has been transferred to Taranaki, The past wet weather has put a stop to the metalling which was ing done. About 8 chains have now been completed, which speaks volumes for the fatherly way in which the Government looks after the welfare of the settlers.
