Mr Richard Whitehead, an officer of the East African Protectorate, near Mombassa, has recently had a narrow escape from a " man-eating " lion, which had killed and devoured many coolies employed in making the railway from Mombassa. Hearing that this notorious lion had been seenat Tsavo, through which place the railway is being made, Mr "Whitehead proceeded there to endeavour to shoot it; and, passing by night through the unfinished cutting for the railway, followed by his coolie sergeant, he saw the lion on a projection above him. He fired, but missed on ! account of the darkness, and the animal sprang upon bim, and tore his clothes into ribbons, bruising and clawing his legs, and making deep claw marks ■upon his back. says the Times Weekly, the ground was uneven and sloping, and in the desperate struggle the lion rolled over, allowing Mr Whitehead to get away and have a second j shot, which was also ineffectual.
