Woodville Borough Council.

The monthly meeting last night was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Motley), and Grs Taylor, Grinlinton, Burnett, McKibbin, Troup, Sandcl and Horne. The minutes of the previous meeting and also of a special meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were received and dealt with as follows From the Land and Income Tax Department, notifying the payment of subsidy.—Received. From Monteitb Bros., applying to have the whole of their frontage asphalted, as thereby the owners of adjoining properties will be compelled to asphalt.—The Council resolved that if the owner of the property at the corner of McLean and Yogel Streets agreed to have the frontage asphalted, the Council would undertake to comply with the request. Mr H. L. dull made the same application for the footpath around the Masonic Hotel.—Agreed provided owner of property consents to pay half the cost. From the Valuer-General, stating that a sitting of the Assessment Court was not necessary unless objections are made to the Department's valuations. —Received. From the Department of Agriculture, stating that Section 5 of The Dairy Industry Act, 1893, is to be brought into operation.—Received. From J. B, Hunter, stating that owing to illness for the past five weeks he had been unable to do any work in Fountains Square, but would attend to same as soon as he was able. —Received. From the United District Charitable Aid Board, stating that the levy upon the Council will be TlO 15s lid.—The amount to be paid. From the Poundkeeper and Ranger forwarding reports. —Received. The Mayor reported that he had looked into the matter of the removal of the iron standard at the corner of Atkinson Street, and had discovered that it was move serious than at first appeared. These standards were really the property of the Survey Department, and not the Borough’s. The Clerk had referred the matter to the Land Office in Napier, and they were wailing for an answer.—On the motion of the Mayor, the matter was referred to the Laud Office, Napier, for settlement. inspector’s report. The Inspector reported as follows: The contract in Grey Street was finished early'in the month, The footpath north of the Presbyterian Church has been metalled. As Mr Hunter has been suffering from a bad leg, he Ims been unable to work in Fovmtaine Square most of the month.

A groin has been put above the bridge in the Mangapapa stream to keep the Hood water from the tving. The formation on Sowry’s Road is finished, and a few chains of metalling done. Given fine weather this contract will be finished in a few days. The asphalt contract in Vogel Street has been completed. As Mr J. J. Murphy wanted the McLean street footpath in front of the hotel asphalted, I consulted the members of the works committee, who agreed the work should be

none. The job would have been finished this week had the weatln i remained line. Some one has .stolen a lot of short limber from the Di-rough yards. The comraetors finished the road i ■ the Cemetery early in the month. As impounding both day and nialit will commence on the first of May, it is desirable that the pound board shotwt be repaired, painted, and rf-writhm. The notice board at the end of Dm- - goyne street also needs painting at once. I would recommend that the street between Tay and Gladstone streets be widened on the north side for the purpose of keeping the centre of the road dry in bad weather, and that the earth bo used in completing the footpath in front of Mr Furness’ and extending the same. Two building permits were granted duvmg the month, Tenders have been called for levelling and draining the Recreation Ground, also for cutting oat timber in the Mang.iatua river. ACTION ON THE REPORT. It was agreed that the Works Committee come to some arrangement with Mr Hunter re the carrying out of his contract in the Square. The action of the Works Committee was endorsed re the asphalting of the McLean Street frontage of the Club Hotel. Agreed-that all further applications for asphalting be left for the consideration of the Council. Agreed that the pound board be repaired, painted and re-written ; also the not ce board at the end of Bovrgoyne Street, and that tenders be called for the work. Agreed that the recommendation of the Overseer rc the widening of the street near the Catholic Chapel be given effect to at a cost not exceeding £5. THE RECREATION GROUND. The Cleik then read the minutes of a conference between members of the Borough Council and the athletic bodies, at which the following resolutions were passed “That the Committee of Management consist of nine members, of which the Mayor and two Councillors shall represent the Borough Council, and two members each to represent the Football Club, Cricket Club, and Athletic Society respectively, and that the Borough Council hand over Borough Reserve No. 28 for a recreation ground to such Committee.” “ That the Management Committee be empowered to authorise any cricket, football, athletic club, or friendly society, or local body, to make a charge on any occasion that the Management Committee may consider advisable.”

“ That the gate money for admission to the ground on the occasion of matches, &c., where a charge is made, is not to exceed Is.” “That with cricket and football clubs the Management Committee retain 50 per cent, and hand the Borough Council 25 per cent., and the competing clubs 25 per cent, of the proceeds of admission. In the case cf athletic and friendly societies having the ground, to receive 75 percent. of proceeds, and 12 V per cent, go to the Borough Council, and 12V per cent, to the Management Committee,”

“ That the arrangement with the Borough Council with regard to a lease of the ground continue for 5 years from the Ist October next.”

“ That the members of the Committee of Management to represent the various bodies interested be appointed as soon as possible, and that in future the election of members of the Management Committee take place annually in the month of October, the first members elected to hold office until 1900.” Or Grinlinton moved, “ That the Council undertake to keep the hedges and boundary fences in repair of section 28.’'—Seconded by jJCr McKibbiu, and carried. The Committee of Management consists of the following :—Football Club, B. Bagley and H. P. Horne ; Cricket Club, C. G. Scott and G. T. Hall; Athletic Society, C. Hall and F. Kenney; Borough Council, Crs Grinlinton and Troup, and the Mayor as Chairman. The resolutions passed at the special meeting were then adopted. TENDEKS. The following were received: — Contract 180—Levelling, ditching, &c., in Recreation ground ; —Jas. Sergeant, £49 ; Jas. Smith and A. C. Bradford. £125 17s 6d. The lower tender was accepted. Only two tenders were received for the contract of cutting timber out of the Manga-atua stream. As both were a great deal above the estimate, neither was accepted. The Works Committee were asked to inspect Fergusson Street North, and report to next meeting. Agreed that enquires be made as to the cost of suitable lamps with the view of lighting the streets. The Mayor gave notice to move at the next mc.tia 0 that a rate of 3|-d in the £ bs struck for the ensuing year. Accounts to the amount of £l2l 18s 0d were passed for payment,, and the meeting adjourned.
