Wesleyan Sunday School Anniversary.

The usual soiree in connection with the above was held on Wednesday evening in the McLean Street church. The attendance was only fair, owing, no doubt to the difficulty of people getting away from the everlasting tie of the cowyard and milking bail. Still the gathering was a very pleasant one. The church was nicely decorated for the occasion, and the tea tables were very well set off with flowers. The tables were presided over by Mrs Baillie, and by Miss Moore and Miss Loveday ; Miss F, Walker and Miss M. Loveday ; Miss Martin and Miss Sowry; and Miss Levy and Miss G. Loveday. Very pretty table ornaments the young ladies made, and very pleasantly an.d promptly they attended to the needs of their guests. Besides tb ese ladies a number of others gave willing help in the vestry at the catering department there. At the after meeting the chair was taken by the Rev. S. D. Peryman, who read an apology from the Eev. J, 0. Eccles for his inability to attend through having to attend the Diocesan Synod in Napier. The report, which was read by Mr D. Baillie, superintendent of the School, said that since the previous one there had been great improvement, but there was still room for more. Mrs Peryman had opened a bible class, which was very much appreciated, and - had an average attendance of fourteen, while there were 8B scholars on the roll of the school with an average attendance of between forty and fifty. The rough weather had interfered with this a good deal. They had three officers and four teachers uow, having been hard hit duripg the year by the loss of four teachers, three of whom left in one week. The report asked for books for the library, and stated that the prizes would bo distributed at the Few Year. The Rev. H. J. Lewis said that if he might be allowed to do so, he would like to suggest that at the next anniversary the school should invite the Presbyterian school over to its afternoon children’s service. He then proceeded to address the children, taking, curiously enough, the very same subject as the Rev. kfr Philip on Sunday afternoon “ A Penny,” )g]t treating in altogether a different way. The Rev, Mr Philip gave a lengthy address, consisting, of numerous anecdotes cleverly strung together. During the evening recitations were given by Ada Baillie and Clar-

ence Cox. Under the leadership of Mr Lawrence the children took up a big part of the evening with singing, and did it very nicely. Miss Moore presided at the organ. At the close of the meeting Mr Richards moved a vote of thanks to all and sundry who had helped, and this was 'carried with acclamation. We congratulate the school on the success of its annual effort.
