Hawke’s Bay Education Board.

This Board met on Tuesday. The following correspondence was read and dealt with ; .From Danuevirke, asking the Board to define the power of the truant officer ; and asking the Board to approve the holidays, 18th and 19th instant, granted by the committee.—Holidays granted. From Kumeroa, applying for £l6 to paint the outside of the school, and £5 to drain the playground,— The latter sum only agreed to. From Mangatu, forwarding a letter from the Department on the subject of establishing a school there. —lt was stated that after the last general election Mr Carroll had promised the settlers that a school would be established there. It appeared that there had been an aided school there, run on peculiar lines. No proper building was provided, the conditions not warranting it. The shed which had done duty as a school house was now used as a shearing shed. The matter had been represented to the Minister for Education, ’who had referred it to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, which in turn lacked funds. A letter had been written by the Secretary to the petitioners laying before them the position of affairs, and pointing out the conditions under which a school could be established. —D.ferred. From Manga-atua, asking for an assistant mistress, which was now “warranted by the attendance.—Regulations to be followed, a pupil teacher was the utmost they could have. From Napier, applying for a grant towards the cutting : out classes. The Minister for Education had been appealed to for a subsidy under the Technical Schools Act, but he referred the committee to the Board. —Mr Tanner moved, and Mr Sutton seconded, that £lO be granted, the mover stating that it was work which should be encouraged in every way. —Mr Gilberd moved as an amendment that a competent person be asked tp report on the classes, in order that the Board might see whether any money voted was properly spent.—Amendment carried. From Norseyyood, Miss Webb applying for leave to attend University examination, and wanting substitute appointed.-—Granted. From Woodville, recommending that Miss Moore be appointed assistant teacher, and Caroline Nicholls pupil teacher,'—Approved. From Wairoa, asking that the midsummer holidays commence two weeks owing to the alterations to the school, —Agreed to. MISCELLANEOUS. The Education Department asked for the Board’s opinion on The Teachers’ Appeal Act, Technical Aid, and The Education Board Election Act. -Board to consider questions in committee. The Caledonian Society, Gisborne, offered a gold medal for tlje pupil obtaining the highest number of marks in the scholarship examination.—Received with thanks. Applications from Elsthorpe, Wah roa, Waerenga'4ika, Te Arai, Or r mondvjlle, and Makaretu, for grants for additions and alterations were referred to a sub'-committee, A sub - committee, consisting of Messrs Sulton, Wdliams, Gilberd, and Dr Sidey, was appointed to go into the question of bonus, to report to a special meeting of the Board early in Decembers
