Thus the N.Z. Times on tho unemployed question, especially those who are unemployed through no fault of their own :—“ To get them on laud, the Land for Settlement Act must be amended. Let it be amended. The distance limit is too far from the towns where relief is most wanted ; the Purchasing Board’s limits are too narrow for brains. These are the things that require amendment. Liberal wolves in sheep’s clothing helped the Conservatives to give us these defects. They must_ now bo regarded as both equally disingenuous in their conduct, and reform must be made in spite of them.’

The Sydney Morning Herald commenting on tho Ncrv Zealand Treasurer’s statement that New Zealand is looking forward to the time when it will have a navy of its own, says that whether this is because Now Zealand is doubtful of the ability of tbe existing fleet to defend the Australian shores and its own as well, or whether from a desire to separate New Zealand as far as possible from the continent, docs not appear, but it is quite obvious that for New Zealand to put her band in her pocket and provide ships for her own protection is quite a different thing from uniting with the other Australasian colonies for Federal defence. The latter have received no encouragement from New Zealand politicians to depend on them for help to make Federation an accomplished fact, and if we are told to take the utterance of the Treasurer seriously, it would almost seem as if New Zealand had determined to hold aloof altogether from Federation, and even from a scheme of Federal defence.
